A dual fuel hybrid heating system works by pairing an electric heat pump with a gas furnace and using a smart control system to automatically switch between them based on the outdoor temperature.

The system operates using the following logic to maximize energy efficiency and comfort:

  • Mild Weather (Above 40°F): The heat pump serves as the primary heat source. It is highly efficient in these temperatures, often delivering over three units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
  • Cold Weather (20°F to 40°F): The heat pump continues to run but may reach its capacity. The control system may activate the gas furnace to supplement the heat pump, ensuring the home stays warm during temperature dips.
  • Extreme Cold (Below 20°F): The system “locks out” the heat pump because its efficiency drops significantly in frigid air. The gas furnace takes over completely as the primary heat source to provide powerful, dependable heat.
  • Defrost Cycles: If frost builds up on the outdoor heat pump coil, the system briefly reverses operation to melt it. During this time, the gas furnace kicks in to prevent cold drafts.
  • Rapid Heating: On extremely cold days, the system can run both the heat pump and the furnace simultaneously to provide maximum heat output for quick temperature recovery.
