When does a Dual Fuel System Switch from Electric to Gas?

A dual fuel HVAC system automatically switches from an electric heat pump to a gas furnace based on the outdoor temperature and the home’s heating demand. This transition is managed by a control board and a smart thermostat to ensure the most efficient fuel source is used.

The system typically switches based on these temperature thresholds:

  • Mild Weather (Above 40°F): The system relies on the electric heat pump, which is highly efficient in these temperatures.
  • Cold Weather (20°F to 40°F): This is known as the balance point. The control system monitors real-time conditions. The gas furnace may activate to supplement the heat pump if demand exceeds its capacity or during defrost cycles to prevent cold drafts.
  • Extreme Cold (Below 20°F): The system reaches a lockout point where the heat pump is turned off entirely and the gas furnace takes over as the primary heat source. Gas combustion is more efficient and reliable than a heat pump during deep freezes.

Smart thermostats can further optimize this switch by using weather-responsive algorithms and outdoor sensors to maintain the most efficient operating mode for as long as possible.
