Central Air vs. Ductless: Making the Right Choice

central air vent vs. ductless wall unit

The options when selecting a new AC system can be overwhelming and complex. Ductless/mini-split systems and central AC are two of the most popular options, so let’s compare their pros and cons.

Central Air Conditioning

Central air conditioning moves cool air throughout a home using ductwork. Ducts are typically in a home’s ceiling, and the system uses an outdoor condenser and indoor evaporator to condense and push cool air.

Pros of Central Air

Low Installation Cost

If you already have solid ductwork in your home, the cost to install a central air system is lower than the cost of ductless installation. However, this pro is null and void if you have to install ducts.

Power and Reach

Generally, central AC is more powerful, cooling every corner of your house. Even with all ductless units on high, your home may still be warmer than you like. But with central AC, creating a refreshing ice box is easy.

Integrations and Options

Since central air is more common, it’s easier to find air quality products and integrations that fit your system. When installing central air, you also have more options in terms of models, brands, styles, and specific features.

Aesthetics

Most central air systems are very subtle. They’re virtually invisible aside from small portholes where the air blows out.

Cons of Central Air

High Utility Bills

Central system installation can be affordable, but the size and power of these systems mean they use much more energy and cost more to run. Expect high summer utility bills with central systems.

No Zone Control

With central systems, you don’t get the control and customizability of ductless air handlers. You can’t set different temperatures in various rooms; everything will be set at the same temperature.

Duct Maintenance

Ductless systems need maintenance more often, but duct maintenance is more difficult. Ducts should be cleaned and maintained annually, which can be a pain.

Ductless Air Conditioning

Ductless systems also use an outdoor condenser and an indoor evaporator/air handler but use thin cables attached to air handlers to move air instead of ducts.

Usually, every room in the house will have its own air handler that sits high on the wall.

Pros of Ductless Systems

Energy Efficiency

Ductless systems are far more efficient than central air systems. The control over the air handlers and zones, plus the thin and secure cables, mean you can use less air to cool your home.

Many factors determine the energy use of any system, but generally, the best ductless systems are more energy efficient than the best central systems.

Temperature Zoning

With central air, the system is either on or off. With ductless systems, every air handler can be controlled individually, making it easier to save energy and money. It also allows household members to customize their room temperatures.

Low Cost to Run

You can enjoy lower utility bills because ductless systems are more energy efficient. If you’re frugal with your ductless system, you can pay a fraction of what central air users pay for the same comfort level!

Flexible Size and Use

You can choose how many air handlers you want and where to put them, giving you more control over installation cost and zoning. Some ductless systems can also double as heating systems!

Cons of Ductless Systems

Expensive Installation

Although a ductless system might lower your utility bills, the installation process will cost you a decent amount of money. But, as mentioned, you can choose a smaller system with fewer handlers to save money.

Aesthetics

The air handlers and ductless cables are not the most attractive, and you have to look at them in every room of your house. For those who hate the bulky look, ductless systems are not aesthetically pleasing.

Weak Filtration

Ductless systems have filters, but they’re not as strong as central air filters and must be cleaned or changed more frequently.

If allergens, dust, and odors are major concerns to you, this may impact your decision.

Choosing the Best System for You

When deciding on an AC system, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you have existing ductwork?
  • Are aesthetics important to you?
  • How large is your home?
  • Do you want zoning control?
  • What is your AC installation and utility budget?

Ductless systems are flexible and energy-efficient but can be unattractive or ineffective. Central AC is more powerful and aesthetically pleasing but often costs more.
